Low mist from the river at sunrise hid the numerous campers in front of me.

    Sunnies at the Sand Dunes

Sunflowers and light smoke from the numerous wildfires around the country made for some nice additions to the sand dunes at Great Sand Dune National Park.

The shadowed mountains seemed like it could make for a dramatic black and white of the sunflowers.

I got to the Tetons in the first weeks after it opened after the COVID shutdowns. There were so few people there (at least during the week), it was eerie to be at popular spots and either have it to myself or with nor more that half a dozen others.

I've only seen Polemoniums in their blue/purple color before. This was on the Silver Dollar Trail on the way to Guanella Pass in Colorado.

This is the color I'm used to seeing the Polemoniums in. It was just a few feet away from the white ones.

Wildflowers abounded in the Snowy Range of Wyoming.

  • White Columbines

    White Columbines

Being somewhat bored with the ubiquitous blue/purple columbines that are the stae flower of Colorado, these white ones piqued my interest.

On the trail up to Handies Peak in American Basin, Uncompahgre Range in SW Colorado, these diminutive beauties were just starting to open up.

Comet Neowise Over the Snowy Range

I drove up to Wyoming hoping to catch the comet Neowise over the Snowy Range Mountains. The first night was completely cloudy and super windy, but upon my return, as the clouds moved through, there were occasional burst of bright light that I knew had to be the comet. The obscured the tail of Neowise, but the rest is visible in the right upper quadrant.

This wildflower-filled meadow was the start to the trail up Handies Peak (14,058') in the Uncompahgres of SW Colorado.

After an abortive trip in to the Wind River Mountains 2 weeks before, where I ended up walking in to the base of Warbonnet Peak and out in a day (about 15-16 miles). I spent some time hiding from a good old-fashioned thunderstorm (rain, hail, graupel, thunder and lightning) while my dog whined. I thought I'd just walk back a bit, hopefully finding a place to pitch my tent, but ended up walking all the way out. The last hour was by headlamp.

When I returned to the Winds, I was more organized; now I had my water purifier so I didn't have to carry water and a dog pack so I didn't have to carry dog food. I also had a different, lighter camera setup as comet Neowise was no longer in the sky. It would have been right over the Cirque of the Towers. With a lighter pack, the walk in was much easier.

    Evening Storm Over Temple

Somehow, my camera had gotten turned on during my hike in and almost drained the battery. I used that battery up doing some night photography, then moved to my 2nd one for that night & much of the next day as I explored the Cirque. In the evening, when the wind abated, I popped over the ridge to take a look at the conditions. The storm clouds that were moving through over Temple and East Temple Mountains were catching the colors of the sunset. The low battery light was blinking on my camera, so I only took 2 pictures as I wanted to have 1 shot left in case sunrise was spectacular (it wasn't).

Arrowhead Lake sits in the bottom right corner, with Warbonnet Peak rising out of it. On my previous hike in, I was just beyond the tip of the arrowhead in a bivi cave that I just "knew" would be there.
