Sunrise at Sopris

Mount Sopris is just outside of Carbondale, CO. The aspens in this picture are on a private ranch -- what a view those ranchers have!

The Goblins Lair

There is a very short slot canyon in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah that has various names. The boy who found it named it the Chamber of the Basilisk after the Harry Potter books, but the Park Service renamed it the Goblins Lair. Just a little further down the trail is a smaller but similar feature named the Goblettes Lair. It being Halloween weekend, I thought I needed to pay a visit.

The Little Grand Canyon

In the northern San Rafael Swell, there is an area called the Little Grand Canyon. There is a float trip that winds through there and one can hike to some pictographs on the feature that is in the lower center of the picture.

Crystal Geyser

Just a handful of miles from the eastern on/off ramp for Green River, UT is the Crystal Geyser. It's a bicarbonate geyser (not thermal) that began as a drill hole. It used to spout 130-140 feet, but a previous landowner partially filled it in, so now it only goes 8-12 feet.

Bowknot Bend

In the Labyrinth Canyon WSA is the Bowknot Bend of the Green River. The bend is 8 river miles long, but less than 1/2 miles as the crow flies. There is a trail that goes over this notch, so if a boater can hike up and over & be picked up by their companions as they float down the river.

Outside of Moab, UT, people used to bungie jump off of this arch. Thanks to social media, the BLM became aware of this activity and shut it down.

Pinto Arch

On the way to Corona Arch is pinto Arch. Until this trip, I had always thought, "I'll check it out on my way out" and forgot.

The Totem Pole in Color

New Years Eve 2021 brought snow to Monument Valley, UT. This is the Totem Pole, or Yei Bi Chei.

The Navajo have a ceremony here most winters (not during the pandemic) where they dance all night long for Yei Bi Chei, the Holy One and All His Children.
